Understanding the Teenager in Your Life:
From "Disconnect to Reconnect"
Understanding the Teenager in Your Life: From "Disconnect to Reconnect" is a six-week group class for parents of teenagers. Topics will include adolescent development, communication between parents and teens, conflict resolution and self-fulfilling prophecies.
Teenagers experience an intense phase of transition as they begin to pull away from their parents, although they still need guidance and nurturing. When there’s huge developmental fluxes and changes, often we abandon those who go through transitions. This class aims to help keep the lines of communication open and constructive. The focus is resolution-based and is not designed to be a forum for parents to complain about their children. We may have different stories, but our emotions are very similar — that place of frustration and fear about not being able to reach our kids.
Classes are every Wednesday night from 7 to 9:00 p.m., March 5 through April 16 (no class on March 26). The classes will be held a the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship at 2945 N.W. Circle Boulevard in Corvallis. Preregistration for the class is suggested, by phone at 541-753-1820, or by e-mail at

Systemic Constellations
"Family Matters - Healing Your Family, Healing Yourself"
The Systemic Constellations process is fairly new to the United States, although it has been used in Germany for the last 50 years. It is also popular in the UK and Latin America. This cutting- edge approach is a highly effective and proven method for revealing the unseen frameworks that give form to your life experiences. This work enables a profound change on a deep energetic level, and is like nothing you have ever experienced before. Participation in a Systemic Constellation can facilitate long-term and often life changing results. Come join us and you will experience what it means when you go to a “Family Matters – Healing Your Family, Healing Yourself” Systemic Constellation.
What is Systemic Constellation Work?
Systemic Constellation Work is a means by which we can reveal and resolve hidden dynamics within our family systems, which contribute to current pain or dysfunction.
By working with representatives in the field, we can discover solutions so that the individual and the family soul can move toward greater clarity and healing.
The work is grounded in a phenomenological understanding of ancestral dynamics and the hidden forces that hold sway over current experience.
Family systems have enormous power and strong bonds and they have the power to affect everyone in the system regardless of their behavior. The family gives life to the individual, with all the accompanying possibilities and limitations.
If something intervenes in some way that disregarded this systemic force, it would be a disruption of order.
Often a person’s love for his or her parents has been disturbed or interrupted at some point. That is associated with deep pain for the child and the pain is expressed by opposing the parents.
You can see things different when you realize that you can rely on love. love is always there. you only need to locate it. If someone is angry with his or her parents, it usually means an early interrupt. If you can find that, and help the child to reach out to the mother and father as they were at that previous time, then the child can turn to them again.
The work is done in a group setting, allowing for participants to act as representatives of various parts of the client’s system. This allows the client to observe his or her own dynamic from a new and more conscious perspective.

Where did Systemic Constellation Work come from?
Bert Hellinger, now in his eighties, is a master therapist, philosopher, poet and best-selling author in Germany. From years of clinical practice, he created a unique approach of Systemic Family Constellations, which is revolutionizing the fields of therapy, human growth, and behavioral change. Bert Hellinger had studied and practiced many forms of therapy including learning from the Zulu’s of South Africa before developing this synthesis. Hellinger's innovative and extraordinary ideas are also are based on a history of work including that of Virginia Satir ( family reconstruction approach), Jacob Moreno (Psychodrama).
Family Constellations use something completely new - something until now has not been consciously perceived in any other type of therapy. It is a phenomenon called the “knowing Field” - a concept introduced by Albrecht Mahr. The work with constellations cannot be fully grasped without an understanding of this phenomenon.
Constellation work is done at a soul level. What this means is that, rather than addressing the conscious mind or psyche of the client, the aim of Constellation Work is to move deeper, beneath the rational, to the level of the Soul. There we may allow change to happen in a gentle and supportive way that doesn’t always occur to the conscious mind. Remember that the Soul moves more slowly than the mind, but its effects may reach more deeply and last longer.
Systemic Constellation Work is extremely popular in Germany, The United Kingdom and Latin America but has only recently been introduced to the United States where it is generating increasing interest.

What can it do for me?
Systemic Constellation Work can provide stimulating new directions for our lives; relieve both conscious and unconscious entanglements with our family systems; release long held feelings of guilt and shame; remove blocks to communication; and even address some physical symptoms of disease. According to Hellinger, about 70% of all problems worked on in psychotherapy stem from family entanglements and can only be solved by looking at the entire family structure.
Ultimately you may experience a greater sense of belonging, leading to an improved sense of well-being and ease. Clients report significant changes in behavior and attitudes both within themselves and in members of their family systems – even those with no knowledge of the work having been done. By helping any part of the system, you help the whole.
This “Approach to healing”
Constellation work does not provide healing. The facilitator does not set out to rescue the client. Instead this work offers the chance to take a glimpse at the truth – to know it, tell it, and name it. Once all of the family members from present and previous generations are allowed to stand in their places, the current family member no longer needs to carry their burdens. Now healing – psychological, physical and spiritual – becomes possible. Growth takes root in a past laid to rest. “For the peace of the dead is dependent on the living, and the wellness of the living is dependent on the dead.”
Who should attend?
Individuals, families, and couples who are seeking help in finding solutions to difficult life situations that have so far proven unsolvable will find new and surprising insights, as well as opportunities for healing movements in their lives.

Working at the Soul level

There we may allow change to happen in a gentle and supportive way that doesn’t always occur to the conscious mind. Remember that the Soul moves more slowly than the mind, but its effects may reach more deeply and last longer.
Preparing for a Constellation
Determine what issue you want to address and what outcome you would like to see. Consider this: If the work were effective, what would it change? How would your “life” look different” Doing this can give you a clear idea of your intention for the work. Constellations can last anywhere from 20 minutes to two hours.
Providing only the “facts” provide the most significant information in family constellation work, unlike traditional therapy, which makes interpretations based on descriptions of character, personality and interpersonal dynamics. Consider; what happened in the lives of the members in your present family or the past few generations of your family of origin, that was traumatic, unusual or which significantly altered the course of events thereafter?”

Compassion fatigue, burnout, cumulative overwhelm, secondary traumatization. This phenomena which has many names and countless variations, presents an ongoing challenge for personal and professional caregivers. Compassion fatigue is a state of emotional, physical and mental exhaustion, where one feels depleted, chronically tired, helpless, hopeless and bad, even cynical about oneself, work, life, and the state of the world. We live in a world in which the media constantly bombards us with images of poverty and violence, bringing us to a point where we almost shut down because it becomes too emotionally taxing to feel for others.
All of us have multiple demands and energy drains in our lives - some positive, some negative - which all require a great deal of emotional and physical attention. There are, however, many hands-on things you can do to mitigate the feelings of compassion fatigue. Practicing self-care techniques can restore your ability to feel compassion for, and sensitivity to, the troubles and difficulties of others. Believe it or not, our natural state is joy.
This invigorating workshop experience offers innovative preventive strategies, as well as options for restoring and manifesting a sense of relative balance and resiliency. It's designed to teach and remind individuals how to create a healing environment for themselves and others, thus returning to their natural state of joy and living a more tranquil life.
This workshop focuses on the power of our thoughts and self-talk and how they impact our emotional, mental and physical well-being. Today, as our busy lives are filled with stress, anxiety and fear it is imperative that we re-learn how to manage our emotional and mental states. Our thoughts are the key to reclaiming a life of joy and happiness irrespective of our circumstances.
